A nation is a group of territories under a single sovereign government. To gain true status as a nation, it must be recognised by an arbitrarily large number of other nations as a legitimate entity. A nation may also be referred to as a state or a country.

Characteristics
Nations typically unify a group of people with something in common, whether it be a geographical connection, an ethnic heritage, common religion or culture or a combination of all these factors. A nation requires the following characteristics as minimum for existence:
- A geographical location: that is, a physical space for its citizens to occupy.
- A sovereign government and a city for that government to sit in.
- Citizens with a reason to create the nation.
- Symbols to be associated with the nation, typically a flag.
- A single form of legal tender, usually operated by its central bank.
Typically, it is the former two which prevent nations from forming. A single government can be difficult for people of opposing ideologies to agree upon. Similarly, securing geographical space for the nation is nigh-on impossible without the consent of another nation to concede the land.

Types
Nations may come in different forms, depending on the history of its formation. Some common types of nations are:
- City-state: A nation built around a single city. Examples: Rovhabia, Portopolis
- Nation-state: A nation built around a single ethnicity. Examples: Kulatia, Ishayu
- Theocracy: A nation built around a single religion. Examples: Edcus, Inhistan
Of course, many nations do not fall into these categories. Their existence can be traced to any number of historical factors, including political secession (e.g. Arrèdux), conquest (e.g. Pycha) or de-colonisation (e.g. Pandiania).
